Eland - Livingstone

Taurotragus oryx livingstonii

Distribution:  Angola, south-eastern D.R.C., Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique.

Size: SH: 1.6m. W: 750kg

Description: The largest of the spiral horn family. Yellowish-brown, with a white chevron under the eyes, distinct black patches at the back of the front legs and vertical white stripes on the side of the body.

Sex Determination: Both sexes have horns and a dewlap. However, the males are considerably taller and heavier than the females, the males’ horns are also a lot heavier at the bases with a much more prominent ridge around the edge.

Trophy Assessment: Old bulls have an almost blue grey coat and an extremely big dewlap; horns are normally worn down once they get to this stage, but it is still possible to get a bull with horns around the 30” mark or bigger.

Shot Placement: Broadside – in the middle of the body straight-up with the front legs.

Frontal – Centre line in the chest.
