Distribution: From north and eastern South Africa through Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Also from northern Namibia, Botswana into southern Angola.

Size: SH: 65cm. W: 70kg.

Description: There are two main species of warthog: Common Warthog: four subspecies are recognized: (Central African Warthog, East African Warthog, Eritrean Warthog, Nolan Warthog and Southern Warthog) and Desert Warthog: two subspecies are recognized: (Somali Warthog and Cape Warthog).

Relatively long-legged but short-necked with prominent, curved tusks.

Like most subspecies the main difference between them are slight colour variations and body size.

Sex Determination: Males have thick rounded tusks, 2 warts on each side of the head and bigger and heavier bodies. Females have 1 wart on each side and more slender and curved tusks.

Trophy Assessment: The bigger the tusks the better the trophy. A 10” (6” of tusk showing) hog is always a great trophy.

Shot Placement: Broadside shot on the shoulders is always the best choice. Or a frontal shot into the chest cavity. Sometimes one will be presented with a running away shot then the best choice will be on the base of the tail.
