Bushpig - Southern

Potamochoerus larvatus

Distribution: From South Africa to the extreme north-eastern Namibia, Angola, Zambia & Zimbabwe. Also Mozambique and southern Tanzania.

Size SH: 85cm. W: 80kg.

Description: Compact, with a slab-like, short-legged body, tapering into the head and snout with little indication of a neck. The dorsal crest and face are often white or grey. Body colour varies from blonde or red to grey, brown, or black. Colour varies with sex, age, region or individual.

Sex Determination: Male pigs will have very prominent warts protruding from the base of the nose and a much wider head and mouth.

Trophy Assessment: Big and heavy head with big warts is normally a sign of a mature boar, when the tusks are visible at the side of the mouth it is always a good boar.

Shot Placement: Broadside shot on the shoulders is always the best choice. Or a frontal shot into the chest cavity. Sometimes one will be presented with a running away shot then the best choice will be on the base of the tail.
