Distribution: South Africa, except the far north-eastern corner, southern Mozambique, Namibia, southern Angola, Botswana and southern Zimbabwe.

Description: Their are two species of eland: Common Eland with three subspecies: (Cape Eland, Livingstone Eland and Patterson’s Eland or East African Eland). Lord Derby’s Eland with two subspecies: (Western Lord Derby’s and Central African Lord Derby’s or Giant Eland).
Very large, tan to grey antelope with a pronounced hump and dewlap. The largest of the spiral horn family.
Sex Determination: Both sexes have horns and a dewlap. However, the males are considerably taller and heavier than the females, the males’ horns are also a lot heavier at the bases with a much more prominent ridge around the edges.
Trophy Assessment: Old bulls have an almost blue grey coat and an extremely big dewlap; horns are normally worn down once they get to this stage, but it is still possible to get a bull with horns around the 35” mark or bigger.
