Bushbuck - Chobe

Distribution: From central to northern Mozambique, north-eastern Namibia, northern Botswana, Zimbabwe except the very south. Angola, south-eastern D.R.C., Zambia and Southern Tanzania.

Size SH: 1.0m. W: 70kg.

Description: There are as many as 23 subspecies of bushbuck and a lot of controversy regarding the different subspecies. Listed below are the 9 most recognized subspecies:

Harnessed, Abyssinian, Menelik’s, Bor, Somali, Masai, Chobe, Limpopo and Cape

The smallest of the spiral horn family in Africa, it has short spiraled horns. Generally speaking the further south, the darker bushbuck become. The exception is the Menelik’s Bushbuck (central Ethiopian highlands) that is the darkest of all the bushbuck.

The Chobe bushbuck, is brightly coloured, with a hue of chestnut and attractively striped. However it is not uncommon to have them only lightly striped or spotted. They are dark brown to black on the outside of the legs above the knees and into the chest and flank.

Sex determination: Males carry the horns, and females are reddish brown.

Trophy assessment: Anything from 14” and bigger
