Distribution: From South Africa, except the very north of Limpopo Province. Into southern Botswana and Namibia.

Description: There are seven subspecies in Africa: Southern Caracal, North African Caracal, Damara Caracal, Limpopo Caracal, Nubian Caracal, West African Caracal, Schmitz’s Caracal.
Medium sized cat, robustly built with hind quarters slightly higher than front. Pale yellowish to rich red coat. Tufted black ears.
The main difference between all the subspecies is the colour. Their colour range from a golden brown colour to a prominent rich brown-red.
Sex Determination: Males will have a heavier body and head and sometimes higher on the leg.
Trophy Assessment: A big heavy male with a big head is always a good trophy to take.
Shot Placement: Normally a side-on shoulder shot when standing on all fours, a frontal chest shot when sitting and facing you or back spinal shot when sitting facing away.
