Distribution: From South Africa, northward into Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia, and Eastwards into Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia and eastern part of Uganda. Restricted to the Waterberg Plateau National Park and its immediate environs in the north central part of Namibia  and also the Caprivi-strip in the north-western part of Namibia bordering Botswana and Angola, and in the western parts of Angola

Size SH: 1.5m. W: 850kg.

Description: Large bovine with thick, bossed curved horns and tasseled ears. The coat is short, often sparse and coloured from a rich red to black.

Sex determination: Old mature bulls have hard solid bosses, coats are pitch black and much bigger in body size and weight than the cows and young bulls

Young bulls can easily be mistaken for females and visa-versa because of the reddish-brown colour smaller body size and lack of solid bosses.

Trophy Assessment: Depending on what you are looking for in a buffalo trophy. The norm for a buffalo when it comes to horn spread, is around 38”, that being said an old bull with broomed down horns and shiny polished bosses is always an excellent trophy to take.
